Rs-232 USB to serial cable for sale at SerialGear.com many other products available including 9 pin serial adapter.

I have seen some new laptops by Lenovo and Dell Latitude that still have 9 pin com ports.

Some HP business models have the port. Otherwise, I m pretty sure you can get pcmcia cards with a db9 serial connection.

I know at one point not long ago you could special order a Dell E-series laptop with a 9-pin serial. I haven t researched it lately, but checking with a sales rep for any of the majors Dell, HP, etc. and they ll tell you if they offer one anymore.

Some Asus gaming laptops I know have them.

all issues i have seen with the cable to go adapter where fixed with the newest driver. seems to be all plug and play now, except there is some question on how to work with com4..

Hey that sounds like a laptop I have that lives in the wiring closet, from a company that stopped existing in 1997, that I use for the sole purpose of connecting to switches via 9-pin serial.

I don t need it often, but it s saved my bacon a couple of times.

You may also find that several laptops may not have 9-pin, however, their docks may. I have several Thinkpad T61 laptops with docks for 9-pin connectors. Check those out.

We use the HP Probook 6555b. You can pick them up cheap on ebay. Good spec machine for the money. I just picked one up for 260US. BARGAIN..

They might want to look at getting a used Panasonic Tough Book. They are very rugged and I know the CF-29 s have a serial port out the back. You can even get them with a touch screen. I have found them on eBay for between 350 - 500 ea. even with the Touch Screen.

Should have made the cost effective side clear Small Business so TuffBooks are out

I have found the Panasonic Tough Books on ebay for between 350 500 USD.

I am using the diablotek usb to serial adapter with xp machines. works no problem.

They seem to be out of stock though.

It comes with a mini-cd but no software on it. I had to download the drivers.

I have one here. Not sure if my manager will let me part with it though.

Thinking bout just purchasing Windows 7 Pro

then using downgrade rights to XP on the existing machine they have.

Instead of trying to get another machine Otherwise just ebay it.

I think Vista should be fine just their user is the issue I think

They have plenty of USB to serial adapters just apparently manufacturers of the software won t support their product on Vista / Win 7 WTF

Not sure about 64 bit win 7 but it works for 32 bit win 7.

The user. Man, I hate those kind of users.

Would running Win7 Pro with XP mode work with one of those USB-Serial do dads.

the last dell series that had RS232 was the E5510 series, as starting from E5520 they stopped providing this.

I have only good results when the converter has his own chip as compared with cheap USB converters

check for brainbox PC cards W7 32/64b compatible

Anyone still making laptops with 9pin serial.

Have a client that connects to older oil field equipment and is having trouble with their vendors supporting Vista Win7 for the connections

The USB to Serial is also a possible issue however its usually the user and not the equipment.

They are wanting XP 9pin serial if possible

figure I might be looking in the used piles. as they were hard to find in 2006 the last time I had to find them.

You can probably find an old laptop for sale with a serial connection. However the long term reliability would be questionable. I have used many of the USB to serial adapters over the years and rarely had a problem. I would strongly suggest a new laptop and a USB-serial adapter.

I looked at various options for connecting to our networking equipment. I almost bought a refurbed Dell D630 plenty aound for 250 as it had a serial port and XP Remeber that XP will reach end-of-life in 2014. I ended up buying a TrendNet TU-S9 for about 15, and downloading PuTTY no Hyperterm in Win7 works great.

The mention of oilfields makes the Toughbook seem like a better idea though

Right about the E5510 series. We were buying them up like crazy until they discontinued them. We are now buying the E5520 and getting the E-legacy adapter basically, a small port replicator that plugs into the bottom.

Also right about the cheap USB converters being garbage. The best one of the bunch and we tested at least a dozen was the Belkin one FSU409, however it still gave our field techs trouble connecting to some fire panels.

It sucks that nearly every manufacturer doesn t even offer a machine that still has a serial connection when there are many industries fire equipment being one of them that are still using the technology almost exclusively. The new panels have ethernet or USB connections, but you can t just switch out one panel, you have to switch them all out if you do that. Even for a small hospital, you re looking at about half a million to do so. Until those things all fail completely, it isn t going to happen for years and years.

Fire, BA, Access and CCTV glad I m out of that one Although liked the newer stuff fine. Just too dedicated to old analog, relay and serial connections. They have no idea about IP and reliability / speed differences.

Remember this same issue working for that industry 5 years ago and having to find laptops with serials then was also a hassle.

OilFields would be nice to do toughbook however the cost of a newer one isn t justified for a small company. Exxon / Chevron / Tosco / Valero can afford the big dawg machines.

Can get a decent older XP laptop with connection integrated or available for a total of 200-400

Toughbook New 3-5k - Used might be a good option though - similar price.

Think i have some old D820 range here with serials. Thinking of selling those.
